Price Action
Confluence
Several independent reasons pointing to the same trade at the same price — a level, the trend, a rejection wick and a confirming close. More confluence, better odds.
In practice
EUR/USD is in an uptrend, price pulls back to a daily support level, prints a bullish engulfing candle, and closes above it. Trend + support + engulfing + confirmation is four independent reasons to buy at one price — strong confluence, and a higher-probability trade than the engulfing candle alone.
Why it matters for traders
Confluence is how professionals stack probabilities in their favour, because each independent reason reduces the chance of being wrong. Requiring confluence before entry is a discipline that filters out marginal setups and keeps you trading only the trades where many factors agree — exactly where the odds are genuinely on your side.
Common pitfall
The pitfall is double-counting the same reason as if it were several: e.g. 'support' and 'a Fibonacci level' on the same price are really one reason, not two. True confluence needs independent factors. Also, demanding so much confluence that you never trade is its own trap. Aim for genuinely independent, non-overlapping reasons that align at one price — three real reasons outweigh five overlapping ones.
Putting it in context
Price action concepts like this one work because they describe what buyers and sellers actually did, rather than what an indicator derived from those prices suggests. Used well, they anchor decisions in structure: clear levels where other participants are likely to act again. The skill that takes time is judging which structures matter on the timeframe you trade — a level obvious on the daily chart is usually significant, while most five-minute structures are noise. Mark your levels before the session, wait for price to reach them, and only then look for a signal. Trading every minor formation without that location filter is the most common reason beginners conclude price action 'doesn't work.'
