Doji

A candle whose open and close are almost identical, leaving a near-invisible body. It signals balance and indecision, not direction.

In practice

After a long uptrend, EUR/USD prints a doji with open and close both near 1.1080 but long wicks above and below — price explored higher and lower all session but ended exactly where it began. The prior trend's momentum has stalled.

Why it matters for traders

A doji flags that the balance of power has stalled, which at an extreme is an early warning of reversal. It does not tell you direction on its own — it is a pause, not a signal — so its value comes from where it appears: a doji after a long run matters; the same shape in a random spot is just noise.

Common pitfall

The pitfall is treating every doji as a reversal signal and shorting into a strong uptrend because 'it's a doji.' A doji only signals indecision; on its own it has no direction. It matters at an extreme after an extended move, where it hints the trend has stalled. Mid-range dojis are noise. Always wait for the candle after the doji to break and confirm direction before acting — the doji flags, the next candle decides.

Putting it in context

Like all candlestick concepts, this pattern is a clue about order flow, not a guarantee about what happens next. Its reliability depends heavily on context: the same shape means little in the middle of a range but can be significant at a well-tested support level, a prior swing high, or a round psychological number. Professional traders also weigh the timeframe — a signal on the daily chart carries far more weight than one on the five-minute chart, where noise dominates. Before trading any candlestick pattern with real money, scroll back through at least a hundred historical examples on the pairs you trade and note how often the expected follow-through actually occurred, and what the best confirmation and stop placement would have been.
