Candlesticks

Engulfing

A two-candle pattern where the second candle's body completely covers the first candle's body, showing that one side reversed the entire previous period.

In practice

A small green candle is followed by a large red candle whose body fully engulfs it — opening above the green's close and closing below its open. Buyers controlled the first candle; sellers not only took over but overwhelmed the entire prior gain in one period.

Why it matters for traders

An engulfing candle is one of the clearest visual demonstrations of a momentum shift, because the second candle reverses the first by its full body. It carries the most weight at key levels or after an extended move, where it confirms that real opposition has arrived rather than just noise.

Common pitfall

The mistake is trading every engulfing candle as a reversal regardless of where it forms. An engulfing pattern carries weight at a key level or after an extended move; the same shape mid-range is often just noise. Also watch the body size relative to recent candles — a small candle engulfing a tiny one signals little. Require context and a meaningful size before acting, and confirm with the next candle's close.

Putting it in context

Like all candlestick concepts, this pattern is a clue about order flow, not a guarantee about what happens next. Its reliability depends heavily on context: the same shape means little in the middle of a range but can be significant at a well-tested support level, a prior swing high, or a round psychological number. Professional traders also weigh the timeframe — a signal on the daily chart carries far more weight than one on the five-minute chart, where noise dominates. Before trading any candlestick pattern with real money, scroll back through at least a hundred historical examples on the pairs you trade and note how often the expected follow-through actually occurred, and what the best confirmation and stop placement would have been.
