EUR/USD rises to 1.1100 then falls to 1.1080 then rises again — 1.1100 is a swing high, 1.1080 a swing low. A trader drawing a trend line connects successive swing lows in an uptrend, and places a stop just beyond the most recent swing low that would invalidate the trend.

Why it matters for traders

Swing highs and lows are the skeleton of every chart structure — the points you draw trend lines between, measure retracements from, and place stops beyond. Identifying them correctly is a prerequisite for almost every price-action technique, because everything from support to breakouts references these pivots.

Common pitfall

The pitfall is mislabeling minor wiggles as swing points, which corrupts every downstream analysis — trend lines, structure, and stops drawn from them. A swing point must be a clear local pivot confirmed by subsequent price action, not any random peak. Take time to correctly identify genuine swings on your timeframe; almost every price-action technique depends on them, so getting them wrong silently breaks the whole method.

Putting it in context

Price action concepts like this one work because they describe what buyers and sellers actually did, rather than what an indicator derived from those prices suggests. Used well, they anchor decisions in structure: clear levels where other participants are likely to act again. The skill that takes time is judging which structures matter on the timeframe you trade — a level obvious on the daily chart is usually significant, while most five-minute structures are noise. Mark your levels before the session, wait for price to reach them, and only then look for a signal. Trading every minor formation without that location filter is the most common reason beginners conclude price action 'doesn't work.'
