Price Action

Volume

How much was traded during a period. A reversal candle backed by above-average volume carries far more weight than the same shape on quiet volume.

In practice

A breakout above resistance on triple the average volume shows real participation behind the move — institutions are involved. The same breakout on half the average volume is suspect, likely to fail and slip back below the level.

Why it matters for traders

Volume is the conviction behind a candle — without it, a move can be thin and easily reversed. Comparing volume to its average tells you whether a signal has institutional backing or is just retail noise, which is the difference between a high-probability trade and a trap.

Common pitfall

The mistake is treating volume as a directional signal — 'high volume, so it must go up.' Volume measures participation, not direction; a strong red candle on high volume is bearish conviction, not bullish. Always read volume together with the candle's direction and context. Also, spot volume in spot forex is tick volume and notoriously unreliable, so use it as a relative comparison, never as a standalone buy or sell trigger.

Putting it in context

Price action concepts like this one work because they describe what buyers and sellers actually did, rather than what an indicator derived from those prices suggests. Used well, they anchor decisions in structure: clear levels where other participants are likely to act again. The skill that takes time is judging which structures matter on the timeframe you trade — a level obvious on the daily chart is usually significant, while most five-minute structures are noise. Mark your levels before the session, wait for price to reach them, and only then look for a signal. Trading every minor formation without that location filter is the most common reason beginners conclude price action 'doesn't work.'
