Bollinger Bands

A 20-period average with bands set a couple of standard deviations away. Bands squeeze when volatility is low and expand on breakouts.

Also called: bollinger band, squeeze

In practice

The Bollinger Bands on EUR/USD narrow to a tight squeeze — volatility has collapsed. When price breaks above the upper band on increased volume, the bands expand sharply, signalling the start of a new trending move out of the squeeze.

Why it matters for traders

Bollinger Bands give a visual map of volatility and relative price extremes, which helps traders anticipate breakouts after quiet periods and recognise when price is statistically stretched. Because volatility is cyclical — squeeze then expansion — the bands offer a timing edge for breakout traders who can wait for the squeeze to release.

Common pitfall

The mistake is treating a touch of the outer band as an automatic reversal signal — 'price hit the band, so short it.' In a strong trend, price can ride the band for many candles, and fading it loses repeatedly. Bands are a volatility map, not a reversal order. Use the squeeze to anticipate expansion and the band touch only as one factor alongside structure and trend; never fade a band in a strong trend.

Putting it in context

It helps to remember that every indicator is a transformation of price — it contains no information the chart itself does not already hold. What a good indicator does is make one aspect of the market, such as momentum, trend, or volatility, easier to read consistently. That is also their weakness: because they derive from past prices, they lag, and in fast reversals they will always be late. Experienced traders therefore pick one or two indicators they understand deeply rather than stacking many, define exactly what each is allowed to contribute to a decision, and accept the lag as the price of objectivity. If a signal and your read of raw price disagree, price wins.
