The MACD line crosses above its signal line while the histogram flips from red to green and grows taller — a bullish momentum shift. If price keeps rising but the histogram starts shrinking, the move is losing force even though price has not turned yet.

Why it matters for traders

MACD visualises momentum shifts that are invisible on the price chart alone, helping traders catch turns early and gauge a move's strength through the histogram. Its value is in confirmation — combining a MACD crossover with a support level and a reversal candle is far stronger than acting on the crossover alone.

Common pitfall

The pitfall is trading every MACD crossover in a choppy market, where crossovers fire constantly and each loses to the next whipsaw. MACD works best in trending conditions and lags in ranging ones. Confirm crossovers with trend context and the histogram's strength, and avoid trading crossovers against the higher-timeframe trend. As with all lagging indicators, MACD confirms momentum that already began — it does not predict the start of a move.

Putting it in context

It helps to remember that every indicator is a transformation of price — it contains no information the chart itself does not already hold. What a good indicator does is make one aspect of the market, such as momentum, trend, or volatility, easier to read consistently. That is also their weakness: because they derive from past prices, they lag, and in fast reversals they will always be late. Experienced traders therefore pick one or two indicators they understand deeply rather than stacking many, define exactly what each is allowed to contribute to a decision, and accept the lag as the price of objectivity. If a signal and your read of raw price disagree, price wins.
