Psychology & Plan
Scalping
A very short-term style: many trades a day held seconds to minutes for small targets. Needs constant screen time, fast execution and tight spreads, because costs dominate the results.
Also called: scalper, scalp
In practice
A scalper trades EUR/USD on a 1-minute chart, aiming for 2–4 pips with a 1-pip stop, completing 50+ trades a session. Because each target is tiny, a 0.5-pip wider spread on a few trades can erase the entire day's edge.
Why it matters for traders
Scalping looks attractive for its frequent feedback, but its economics are brutal: the spread and slippage on every trade take a fixed bite out of tiny targets, so only the tightest spreads and most disciplined execution survive. It suits fast, screen-bound traders and punishes the slow, the impulsive and the over-costed.
Common pitfall
Beginners are drawn to scalping for the fast feedback and 'many trades,' then fail because each trade pays a fixed spread and commission out of a tiny target. The pitfall is underestimating costs: on a 2-pip target, a 1-pip wider spread halves your edge. Unless you have a tight raw-spread account, fast execution, and the temperament to sit glued to the screen, scalping is one of the hardest styles to make profitable.
Putting it in context
Most trading failure is psychological rather than analytical, which is why this idea deserves more attention than beginners usually give it. The mind that calmly reads a chart on a Sunday is not the same mind that watches a live position move against it on a Tuesday, and the gap between the two is where accounts are lost. The reliable defence is to convert decisions into rules made in advance, in writing, and to review your own behaviour as systematically as you review the market. Keep notes on what you felt during trades, not just what you did; after a month, the patterns in your emotions will be as readable as any chart pattern, and far more valuable to fix.
