Basics
Volatility
How much and how quickly price moves over a given period. Gold and GBP/JPY are high-volatility; it drives stop distance, position size and risk, and spikes around high-impact news.
In practice
Gold may routinely travel $20 in a session while EUR/USD travels 60 pips; GBP/JPY can double that on a busy day. If your usual stop is 20 pips on EUR/USD, the same 20-pip stop on GBP/JPY is likely to be hit by ordinary noise before the trade has time to work.
Why it matters for traders
Volatility sets the size of your stops and therefore your position size and your profit potential. Trading a volatile instrument with a calm-market stop guarantees frequent, frustrating stop-outs; trading a quiet instrument with huge targets guarantees you wait forever. Match the stop to the instrument's normal range, not to a fixed number you always use.
Common pitfall
Traders set the same fixed pip stop on every pair and then wonder why they get stopped out on GBP/JPY but never hit target on EUR/GBP. The pitfall is ignoring that each instrument has its own normal daily range. Size your stop to recent volatility — using the average true range — so a volatile pair gets a wider stop with a smaller lot, and a quiet pair gets a tighter stop. A one-size-fits-all stop is risk by accident.
